What Does It Mean to Give the Azan in a Dream?
You may sometimes see yourself doing a great good deed in a dream, and sometimes something very bad — so does a good deed always mean a good interpretation, and a bad deed always a bad one? Below are two dreams that will help clarify this. Let’s take a look.
Two Dreams
A man came to Imam Ibn Sirin and said, “I dreamed that I was giving the Azan — please tell me its interpretation.” Imam Ibn Sirin told him that this dream meant he would be granted honor. Some time later, the interpretation came true, and the man received honor.
Another man came and described the exact same dream — that he too was giving the Azan. But this time, Imam Ibn Sirin gave a completely different interpretation, saying he would face disgrace — meaning he would be humiliated (whereas the first man had been told he would receive honor). This interpretation also came true — the man was arrested for theft not long after, and his hands were cut off.
How Was the Interpretation Given?
One of the Imam’s students asked, “Sir, both of them saw the exact same dream — giving the Azan — so why were the interpretations so different? One received honor, the other disgrace.” The Imam replied, “In the first man who saw himself giving the Azan in his dream, I saw signs of righteousness in him — he did good deeds and avoided sins — so this verse of the Quran came to my mind:
So I gave the interpretation that he would receive honor.
But when the second man described the same Azan dream, I saw signs of sin and wrongdoing in him — he was engaged in sins rather than good deeds — so this verse of the Noble Quran came to my mind:
So from this I concluded that this man would face disgrace, and that is exactly what happened.”
This shows that the interpretation of dreams is given based on a person’s actual condition — if they are righteous and pious, the interpretation will certainly be good, but if they are more inclined toward sin, the interpretation will also carry a bad meaning, no matter how good the dream itself appeared.
